The opportunity of architecture is not just in the creation of buildings. We want to seize this opportunity to think about a new way of practicing that creates the maximum impact for the time that we spend.
Emma is a co-founder and Chief Executive Officer at The Fulcrum Agency and has more than twenty years’ experience working in design practice. I think the big thing really is this idea around social and community impact – it’s a fundamental part of what we're trying to work out through the Agency. How to measure the work we do and be able to assess the work that we've done in terms of its long-term impacts in communities. It would be interesting to know if the way we work could change or not if developed through the lens of social impact, it might change the design process itself - the kind of spatial response might be different - the way in which we engage with clients might be different - or the way in which we collaborate might be different. So, the difference I think is that we're trying to leverage something else out of the architecture - to open up an opportunity within the realms of work that we do, to make a greater impact. That might be not doing a building at all but doing something else.

We have an incredible opportunity to redefine the way we work, the projects we target and the clients we collaborate with – with the singular desire to deliver work that makes a real impact.
I am interested in how, as design thinkers and problem solvers working in the built environment, we can measure the social value that our projects create.

I’m really interested in the concept of agency, both as a model of practice and sociological tool. We seek to embody both definitions. Our structure is more akin to an advertising agency in that we are comfortable looking to experts outside the practice for input into our projects. I love that the work we are pursuing seeks to empower and build capacity.
As Head of Communications, Emma works closely with both Principals. Over her career she has worked in small, medium and large-sized architectural firms helping to craft a distinctive voice for the practice in language that everyone understands.
At The Fulcrum Agency, Emma is responsible for a range of activities including content development, our social media and digital platforms, as well as reaching our community of clients and colleagues through our bi-annual printed publication.
Emma is the Executive Officer for the Association of Consulting Architects, overseeing membership and events in Western Australia. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts and Italian from the University of Western Australia, a Graduate Certificate in Arts Marketing from Deakin University and is partway through her Master of Business Administration at the University of Western Australia.
I see an architect as a critical part of a team and able to see all sides of the challenges that constructing a building presents including the end users, the client, the design team or builder. Working at TF.A has given me the opportunity to be part of a much larger team working on the New Museum from project brief through to final delivery.
Sarah is an Associate at The Fulcrum Agency with over twenty-five years’ experience delivering complex buildings around the world. She is an expert in project leadership, in particular feasibility analysis, project planning, scheduling, construction management and the coordination of large consultant teams.
Sarah has had an adventurous career having led projects in remote and extreme environmental conditions. She was the Project Architect for a multi-award-winning British Antarctic base at Halley VI as well as the new Spanish base at Juan Carlos I. Here in Australia, Sarah led the design and delivery of the Pam Buchanan Family Centre in Karratha, a building that has reframed the approach to design and construction in the north-west.
Sarah is currently the project leader for the $430M New Museum Project as part of The Fulcrum Agency’s role as Architectural Advisor to the West Australian State Government. Sarah received a Master’s degree with Honours from the University of Edinburgh and is a Registered Architect in the UK and Australia.
What do I like most about the work that I do? The opportunity it’s providing to work with communities to help them become more self-sufficient. We’re trying to find a way to change the path so that there is an impact where there might not otherwise be one with a standard outcome.
Heather is an Associate and Registered Architect at The Fulcrum Agency with experience delivering complex projects in metropolitan Perth as well as remote communities in the far-north of Australia.
Heather brings to the practice a belief in architecture’s potential to enhance lives and empower communities. Through her leadership on a series of innovative housing and community infrastructure projects on Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory, Heather has developed skills in consulting with diverse stakeholders and complex multi-disciplinary teams.
As a recipient of the University of Western Australia’s Ferguson Travel Scholarship, Heather lived in Santiago de Chile and worked at esteemed social housing ‘do-tank’, ELEMENTAL. She is an active member of the National Association of Women in Construction and tutors in the Architecture program at Notre Dame University.
I enjoy drawing on my mixed bag of experience and skills in a practice that puts diverse thought, communication and empathy at the core of what we do.
Michael is a Senior Architect working on the New Museum Project as part of our role as Architectural Advisor to the West Australian State Government. Michael and team act as a conduit between the contractors and government, offering impartial advice and input as the projects reveals itself onsite.
Michael has worked in practices of all scales, including a large national firm where he was a lead part of the team who delivered Perth’s New Children’s Hospital. In 2017 he was the recipient of the Australian Institute of Architect’s Emerging Architect Prize for WA.
Michael is deeply committed to the architecture profession outside of practice and has stood as co-chair of the Australian Institute of Architect’s National Committee for Gender Equity, co-chair of the Australian Institute of Architect’s Gender Equity Taskforce in WA and was Vice President of the Association of Consulting Architect’s WA branch. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture with Honours from Curtin University.
I am particularly interested in how tFA seeks to advocate for self determination in remote communities. Through rigorous engagement and design process for housing and community facilities, our intent is to improve existing conditions and support future growth.
Akira is a Registered Architect with skills across architecture and urban design. She was the first point of contact in our role as Estate Architect for the residential developments at Perry Lakes and White Gum Valley, overseeing the approvals process for new homes on these sites. This role has given her a thorough understanding of the complexity of the built environment, in particular regulations, guidelines and the permeable intersection between architecture, urban design and landscape.
Akira is committed to working on projects that deliver social value as one of their key performance indicators. She has worked on numerous education, innovative housing and master planning projects across Western Australia and the Northern Territory, having travelled regularly to Groote Eylandt. In 2013, Akira participated in a construction project in Nepal as part of Architects Without Frontiers.
Akira graduated from the University of Western Australia with a Master of Architecture with High Distinction. She is currently on maternity leave but maintains a keen interest in the activities of the studio.
Our work at The Fulcrum Agency is unique, and we are in an exciting position with the opportunity to make a positive impact on the wider community through our projects.
Claire is a Registered Architect with a broad expertise across residential, educational and recreational spaces. She has an adaptive approach to her work and is able to confidentially address different project types and scales. This is a useful skill with the range of projects we are turning our attention to!
Having cut her teeth in some of Melbourne’s best practices, she has brought a refined design sensibility to TF.A. Her interest in the craft of design is reflected in her enjoyment of woodworking and her current study of Japanese joinery techniques.
Claire received her Master of Architecture from Deakin University where, through an exchange program, became a member of the European Architecture Students Association. She continues to maintain her connections with Architects in Europe and throughout Australia.
What I love about The Fulcrum Agency is its clarity of purpose. It’s very clear to me as to where we are going and how we need to get there.
Brad is a Graduate of Architecture with experience working in teams to deliver architecture and master planning projects across metropolitan and regional Australia. Prior to studying architecture, Brad worked as a primary school teacher and brings to our practice an interest in the design of schools and the importance of education. He maintains his connection to teaching through his role as design tutor at Curtin University and the University of Western Australia.
Brad is also the Head of Communications for the WA branch of EmAGN, the Australian Institute of Architect’s Emerging Architects and Graduate Network. He has used this platform to build a program of events and services to support graduates as they transition from university to working life.
Upon graduation and like Heather, Brad was awarded Curtin University’s Peter Hunt Travel Prize, which allowed him to investigate European approaches to alternative housing typologies, such as co-housing and housing cooperatives. This knowledge has helped to inform his approach to related projects at TF.A.
