The opportunity of architecture is not just in the creation of buildings. We want to seize this opportunity to think about a new way of practicing that creates the maximum impact for the time that we spend.

Emma is a co-founder and Chief Executive Officer at The Fulcrum Agency and has more than twenty years’ experience working in design practice. Emma is skilled in both the business of practice and the critique of projects. She currently Chairs the Design Review Panel for the City of Canning and sits on the Design Review Panels for the City of Rockingham and City of Stirling. She was recently selected as a member of Western Australia’s newly appointed State Design Review Panel.

Emma was the inaugural Chair of the Australian Institute of Architect’s National Committee for Gender Equity and is a frank advocate for creating working environments that allow parents to maintain sustainable working lives and is an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at Monash University.

I think the big thing really is this idea around social and community impact – it’s a fundamental part of what we're trying to work out through the Agency. How to measure the work we do and be able to assess the work that we've done in terms of its long-term impacts in communities. It would be interesting to know if the way we work could change or not if developed through the lens of social impact, it might change the design process itself - the kind of spatial response might be different - the way in which we engage with clients might be different - or the way in which we collaborate might be different. So, the difference I think is that we're trying to leverage something else out of the architecture - to open up an opportunity within the realms of work that we do, to make a greater impact. That might be not doing a building at all but doing something else.

Kieran is a co-founder and Principal at The Fulcrum Agency and uses his skills in design, research and advocacy to deliver positive outcomes for communities.

Kieran’s portfolio includes urban design and architectural projects that have been awarded by the Australian Institute of Architects across commercial, public, urban design, interiors, education and residential categories, as well as winning the Australian Award for Urban Design and an International Award for Public Participation. His writing has been published on topics covering urban renewal and densification, Indigenous housing and new models of practice and procurement, and he is regularly invited to speak on these issues.

Kieran is an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at Monash University, and Industry Partner for the University of Sydney’s Health Habitat Incubator. Kieran has a Bachelor of Architecture from Curtin University and is a regular contributor to university programs in Western Australia.

What I love about The Fulcrum Agency is its clarity of purpose. It’s very clear to me as to where we are going and how we need to get there.

Brad is a Graduate of Architecture with experience working in teams to deliver architecture and master planning projects across metropolitan and regional Australia. Prior to studying architecture, Brad worked as a primary school teacher and brings to our practice an interest in the design of schools and the importance of education. He maintains his connection to teaching through his role as design tutor at Curtin University and the University of Western Australia.

Brad is also the Head of Communications for the WA branch of EmAGN, the Australian Institute of Architect’s Emerging Architects and Graduate Network. He has used this platform to build a program of events and services to support graduates as they transition from university to working life.

Upon graduation and like Heather, Brad was awarded Curtin University’s Peter Hunt Travel Prize, which allowed him to investigate European approaches to alternative housing typologies, such as co-housing and housing cooperatives. This knowledge has helped to inform his approach to related projects at TF.A.
